What is the name of your state? CT

I have several questions about being appointed a Conservator of an Estate.

Is it customary for a Probate Court to appoint a Conservator of an Estate that is not a family member? If so, is it usually an attorney? And, if so why? I have a family member that was "sucked into" accepting an appointment by a Probate Judge and it has been a living nightmare for her! Now there is no money and she is paying out of her own pocket to protect the Estate home, insuring it and paying for the 'lights' to stay on! Now come on, how could someone be placed in that situation? If a Conservator is responsible for these expenses, why would anyone accept this kind of appointment?

Your input would be appreciated.

A conservatorship without an end is becoming costly!! :(

Yes, when a family member(s) is not eligible to be a Conservator.

It depends.
And, if so why?
That is what the judge decides.

You mean that this was voluntary rather than there being a competency hearing and exams?

Who was paying her expenses prior to the Conservatorship? Without access to her money, just exactly how is she paying these bills? Conservators HAVE to close the bank accounts of the ward and place the monies in Conservator account(s).

Conservators do NOT pay a ward's expenses with their own money. The ward's expenses are paid with his/her money.

It's not costing YOU anything.
