Speeding Ticket

What is the name of your state? Louisiana
Received a ticket speeding 77 in 60 mile zone, which is 17 miles over speed limit. How does one go about getting a ticket reduced and is there a sample letter to request the reduction of the ticket. I have no clue as to what I need to do. Is that called a deferred Adjudication or what. I'm not familiar with law terms. Can anyone help me out with this. Really just needing a sample letter for this. I would like to reduce from a moving to a non-moving violation.

generally, you have to appear to ask for the deferment or probation. but it is well worth your time when you look at the insurance increase.

Standard answer

Here are some hints on appearing in court:

Dress professionally in clean clothes.

Do not wear message shirts.

Don't chew gum, smoke, or eat. (Smokers...pot or tobacco...literally stink. Remember that before you head for court.)

Bathe and wash your hair.

Do not bring small children or your friends.

Go to court beforehand some day before you actually have to go to watch how things go.

Speak politely and deferentially. If you argue or dispute something, do it professionally and without emotion.

Ask the court clerk who you talk to about a diversion (meaning you want to plead to a different, lesser charge), if applicable in your situation. Ask about traffic school and that the ticket not go on your record, if applicable. Ask also about getting a hardship driving permit, if applicable. Ask about drug court, if applicable.

where in louisiana was this?

just wondering because this past friday in St. John Parish, i got the weidest ticket I have ever seen. I was on I-55, having just got on from I-10 about 3 quarters of a mile from the onramp. I had just been to court the day before for a DWI from 04 so I was frantic as i got out of my van. This young deputy asked for my license and i told him I didn't have one, he said okay and I nervously told him I was going to pick my son up at his University, and my speedodometer was acting up a little. He just kept on writing and said here, 103mph in a 70, and hurried back to his car and pulled someone else over before I even left.
1) My van cannot go 103. part of the reason is I have a bad transmission sensor and also cause it needs a tuneup
2) He didn't question anything...registration, insurance, call my name in ...nothing

I don't know whether to report him or just pay the ticket before court so it won't affect my probation from the DWI.

In Louisiana, find a local politician to help you out. Sad, but true. Some parishes have it set up with the court for constiuents that generally don't have bad records to get it off your record for a "fee"

I contacted the sheriff's department for that parish and I was told to write a letter requesting to reduce from a moving to a nonmoving violation along with the fees for the fine of $177. I'm puzzle as to know if there is a letter template for this sort of request and how do I word it legally.

Thanks for the advice, I did that and the fine was reduced and removed from driving record. Can't get anymore tickets for 3 months.

How fast will your van go? Find an expert who will testify to the limitations of the van, and maybe you'll get off with like 90 in a 70.
