What is the name of your state? Florida
Wife's daughter and her son moved in with us (left abusive boyfriend) March 2006 and shortly thereafter was in an auto accident and in hospital for over 3 months. She is still unable to return to work (barber). Can we claim her as a dependant on federal income taxes for 2006?

If you meant, you wife's daughter AND her son moved in with you....then....no, you may not. In order to claim an adult child as a dependent they must have lived with you for the entire year, and must have earned less than 3300.00 for the year.

She didn't live with you for the entire year.

So I guess we will only claim the grandson, it's a shame, the daughter was unable to work and earned 0.00 all year.
