Whether the employer has to hold ANY job for you depends on whether FMLA applies. Being on short term disability provides no job protection whatsoever if FMLA does not apply. If there is no FMLA, then your employer doesn't have to offer you ANY job, let alone one at the same salary, when you return from STD.

However, if you are ALSO on FMLA as well as STD, then you get up to 12 weeks of job protection where you have to be returned to either your own job or one that is equivalent in all respects, including salary, as long as you return either during or immediately upon the end of FMLA.
