AL needing help

Junior Member
Hi,

We are in Alabama and my wife was informed she is going to be laid off due to the plant closing. She is due before the plant is to be closed but when she asked how that affected her HR told her that they are cancelling short term disability. It doesn't seem right that they can cancel something that should start before they close this location. Alabama will also not pay for unemployment because she is not able to start a job immediately. The doctor is advising that she go on light duty (half days or no work) for the 2 weeks before the delivery and then stay at home for at least 6 weeks and maybe more just depending upon what happens. Is there any recourse we can take to ease the financial burden. Her policy was originally suppose to be paying 66% of her pay for up to 90 days. Now with it down to zero .... HELP!

In Alabama, the law does not require employers to provide disability benefits at all. There really is nothing you can do to force the employer to continue the disability plan until the actual closing.
