What is the name of your state?NY

I am having a big problem with regarding paying state sales tax for a
business. (It's a sole proprietorship, I just got a DBA and tax #).

Here's the situation: I've been out of work for many years due to
depression/anxiety. Around 2002 my mother got the DBA and bought and
sold small quantities of items wholesale to resell on eBay in a last
ditch effort to make some money from home.

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I called the NYS Tax Dept. and could
swear I remember them saying that there I wasn't required to charge
sales tax on internet sales. From what I've been reading, though, it
looks like I was mistaken. I also didn't file federal income tax
returns because I barely made any money (overall I think I lost money)
but I don't have any records.

To complicate matters I am thinking about applying for SSI, and I'm
afraid of that I will not only get turned down, but I'm living in fear
of getting audited and owing a lot of money I don't have.

Any advice would be appreciated because I have absolutely no idea what
to about this mess.

Thanks,
J.

Have you been contacted regarding the unpaid sales tax? How much were your gross sales? This really may not be that big of a deal if you only had a low dollar amount of sales, and those sales were at a loss. Yes, you are going to have to file the proper returns and pay the proper tax, but it may not be much.
