Gym Membership

I live in Iowa. I wondered if in my state health clubs can hold you to a one year contract membership. A friend of mine told me that they could not, but when I tried to cancel mine, the gym told me I was obligated to pay a $75 fee for breaking the contract even though it does not say anywhere on the membership agreement that a fee is due upon cancellation. Please help. Thanks.
