What is the name of your state? Washington

My 18 year old son was working in a National Park in Wyoming, and he took a six-pack of beer from the store he was working at. He was cited by the park officer with theft (shoplifting) and minor in possession. His ETOH level was 0. Of course, he was terminated from his job and has returned home. There is a $135 fine for each citation, or he can request a court date. Is there any benefit to appearing in court (we live in another state, about a 12 hour drive)? Will these offenses appear on his record with a background check?(The park official was unsure as to what would show up.) How will this affect him in the future?
