I AM ALLERGIC TO PERFUMES. WHEN I COME INTO CONTACT WITH THEM, MY VOCAL CORDS SWELL, I CAN'T TALK, MY SINUSES GET INFLAMED AND IT CAN TRIGGER AN ASTHMA ATTACK. I CANNOT PROVE THIS MEDICALLY BUT THESE THINGS OCCUR WHENEVER I GET WITHIN SMELLING DISTANCE OF PERFUMES IN GENERAL. I TOLD MY SUPERVISOR AND HE SAID THERE IS NOTHING HE CAN DO. HE REFUSES TO EVEN SEND A MEMO ASKING COWORKERS NOT TO WEAR PERFUME. EMPLOYERS JUST DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THIS. I DON'T KNOW OF ANY PLACE I CAN WORK WHERE PERFUME IS BANNED. AT LEAST WHEN I GO SHOPPING I CAN AVOID IT SOMEWHAT BUT AT WORK THERE IS NO WAY TO AVOID IT. I DON'T KNOW HOW I AM GOING TO CONTINUE WORKING, AND I NEED TO WORK,I AM TOO YOUNG TO COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY. WHAT ARE MY LEGAL RIGHTS? I LIVE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Perfume jobs

There are jobs out there that have no perfume rules. One is semiconductors or a clean room environment. You are unable to wear any kind of perfume nor make-up in them. You live an area that has pleanty of them. Look for Varian, National Semiconductor, or Axcelis most of these places are looking for people to operate the tools that make the semiconductor. This is only a helpful suggestion.

maybe....

I do know the feeling - i am also very very sensitive to perfumes and other chemicles. I also have asthma. Asthma is covered under the ADA - disabilty: breathing. Write a formal letter to your superiors and HR explaining the situation and that this affects your work. Ask them in your letter to grant you a "reasonable accomodation" of sending out a letter in regards to the "perfumes/colognes" as well as maybe preparing some kind of policy. Also contact your DR, explain the situation and have him/her write a letter to your employer regarding this matter. If the business does not comply and meets the requirements - you may look into further action.
Been there - done that. :)

I have to question your statement that your problem cannot be proven medically. My wife suffers from the same ailment and it took an alergy specialist 30 seconds to diagnose my wife. He had her sniff some cheap perfume then looked down her throat. Sensitivity to perfumes and colognes is now recognized as a valid ailment. Check with the Dept. of Labor of your state and see if they have any rules concerning your problem.
P.S. My wife controls hers by taking over the counter Benedryl.

perfume allergies

To racer72: The State of NH does not recognize any tests for perfume allergies. No doctor will do it. I believe what your wife had done should be test enough. The Dept. Of Labor called me a liar when I took my former employer to task to get back my comp time. I had pneumonia twice and many other respiratory ailments due to the abnormal amount of perfume in our office. The allergist would only go so far as to say I shouldn't work in that environment, it would cause more physical problems. The doctors out here are rather wimpy. Benedryl makes me very sleepy. Not good for working nights. Most of these drugs are for seasonal allergies and should not be taken day after day. Besides treating a chemical problem with more chemicals is not the answer. My doctor said it was not a good idea. But thank you for your input. Especially, the allergy test.
Perhaps you would be willing to send me the Dr's name and address that I could get more information concerning the test.
