free cable tv

The paying customer (roomate) moved out and the cable company never disconnected their cable. The company has since changed hands and I am still getting the signals (cable)and no bill. Is this something I can get in trouble for? If so, why? I feel it is not my responsibility to keep the cable company's records or connections straight.

Yes. You are knowingly and intentionally stealing cable. A Federal violation.
