still wonderin'....WI-joint or no?

Looking for the best way to go about filing taxes for last year when I have seperated with my husband in '01. One dependant no assets and he owes past doctor bills to feds. Normally I file joint(which is still an option) and I get my half and his half go to the feds for reimbursement. I am worried that if I file seperately I will not be able to claim my daughter for the tax credit. My question is basically...can I file seperately and claim my daughter and get the child tax credit even though we were married? Or if no one can help...do you know anyone that can? Thanks....I am just being prepared!
