Hello Group,

I don't know if you can answer my question or not, but here goes...My company, we'll call it XYZ Corp, may possibly be running some unlicensed software on our network. We have received a notice from an Organization identifying itself as the "Business Software Alliance." They have a web site at http://www.bsa.org. In this notice, which came in the form of a letter to our comptroller, we are notified that they are calling a "truce" for the month of February. This "truce" (check out http://www.bsatruce.com) offers companies a chance to "get legal." There are vague threats also made about "fines" and other penalties, etc.

My question is: Unless I let someone look at the computers connected to my network, how can anyone know if, and/or how many, unlicensed software installations are on my network? Wouldn't a search warrant be needed? And if so, doesn't that require "probable cause?"

We want to do the right thing but this seems almost like some kind of marketing ploy...

Boston, Ma.
