If your child is 20 years old, does a parent have to co-sign
for his/her student loans? If so at what age may a child apply on his own?

My response:

No. Your child is an adult - - remember, according to the law, your child became an "adult" at age 18. If your adult child wants a student loan, he / she can apply for the loan on their own.

DO NOT co-sign any kind of loan. Once a default occurs, you're the one on the hook and your credit can REALLY suffer - - among many other things.

Student loans cannot, except in very, very, very narrow circumstances, be discharged in Bankruptcy, either.

NEVER co-sign a loan for any purpose, for any person - - not even family members.

You have been warned.
