gas meter stoped working,they want $1700

my gas meter apparently stoped working over a year ago, i am now being billed $1,700 for the estimated amount of gas used. i did not get a detailed billing, just the card they send with the amount due. do i have any legal recourse ?
can i be held responsible for their meter not working ?
$1,700 for 12 months seems kind of high.
just sign me "getting gased in missouri".

Call them out to fix the meter and send them a certified letter disputing the charges because of the broken meter.
