What is the name of your state? CO
My best friend died young and suddenly about a month ago. She did have a will. Her husband was a house husband (no kids) who didn't do bills or taxes and he's a little overwhelmed. To complicate matters, she's been unemployed for a while, and had a small business on the side, so there's lots of debt he didn't know about, some in her name, some in her business's name, some in both their names, some where he's listed as an authorized user. He's nor sure where to begin, what to pay and what not to pay, plus he has no money coming in. They own a home with a mortgage, which he'd like to keep, but he has no money for an attorney, can't find proof that last year's taxes were filed, still doesn't have a final death certificate so can't access 401k, annuity, etc.
Where to start?

The first thing to do is hire a lawyer.

But since you can't do that, make a complete and total list of all assets and all liabilities.

Ask a local congressman or senator to have the health department expedite the death certificate. And start contacting the annuity and pension companies immediately--they can get the process going to claim the funds and you may not even need the death certificate for that. At least shop around to get a few fee quotes from attorneys for their services--you can pay them later when you get the pension/annuity money.

Since one of the many services provided by funeral homes is to obtain death certificate(s), which takes about 10 days, why wasn't this done?
