My engine is gone on a car that I financed last year. I have been continuing to make payments on the car however I canceled its insurance because it is not on the road. Now the credit union is threatening to repossess my car because it is uninsured. Can they do this?

With a leinholder - You do not yet wholly one the car.

Is there any way around this?
Pay the loan off.

The insistence on the part of the lienholder (credit union) on having insurance is to protect their property.

And, an extra little tidbit: If they find out that the car doesn't have a motor in it, they can (likely) call the loan due immediately.
