Can a principal take it upon himself to punish a student for something that he allegedly did outside of the school system? It was not on school property, a school function, nothing school affiliated whatsoever. It involved a private function on private property. And he does not even have suffiicient evidence that anything was done wrong.

It depends on the student and the activity. If the student is involved in certain types of special programs - such as youth sports - this can give the principal the angle he needs ... or, if he was present in school garb, etc.

In the end, if you feel that he exceeded his authority, appeal the discipline through whatever process your district and state allows.
