What is the name of your state? New York

I have a quick question on the computation of the total award in an action which includes treble damages.

Total = (Compensatory Damages x 3 = Treble Damages) + Compensatory Damages

- OR -

Total = (Compensatory Damages x 3 = Treble Damages)

There is some debate among the people to whom I have spoken as to which is the correct method. I would hate to get it wrong in the complaint.

Thanks in advance!

Well, to answer my own question....

Cornell Law says:

Treble damages

Certain statutes require that after the jury has determined the amount of the plaintiff's actual damages, the court must award three times that amount. See, e.g. Cohen v. De La Cruz, 523 U.S. 213 (1998).
