What is the name of your state? Minnesota

I really don't know if this belongs in this forum but I'll give it a shot. My friend sold his car to our landlord for about 1500. The landlord wrote him a check but it bounced, now normally this would not be a big deal but my friend is a foreign exchange student and had moved back to Hungary by the time the check had bounced. Yesterday we found out that he isn't actually a landlord and has been collecting rent from us illegally. The real owner of the house is kicking him out in the next few days and I would like to settle this car thing before he leaves. Could this be considered stolen property, and if so, could the cops tow the car somewhere so that he does not run off with it? What would be the best way to get my friend the money he deserves?

Thank you!
