An Australian ebay buyer with legitimate claim to about $600usd due to goods delivered not as advertised flies to USA (Florida in this case) to pursue matter in Small Claims court - can he also ask for travel costs incurred to be awarded?

(Assuming a win) the plaintiff can recover principal, pre-judgment interest if provided by agreement*, and court costs (filing and service expenses).

*Pre-judgment interest, if not provided by agreement, normally depends on a specific request in the claim and is discretionary with the court. (Not being from FL, specific local practices are unknown. The Small Claims statute does permit the court to “borrow” from the general Rules of Civil Procedure, and that means an additional area of uncertainty with regard to interest and attorneys’ fees.) You can review the Small Claims statute here:

Additional expenses such as travel, inconvenience, time off from work, asset investigation, skip-tracing and generally anything else that you want to throw into the mix will not be included.

So, to sum it up...it will probably cost more in non-reimbursable expenses than one would win.
