What is the name of your state? Pennsylvania

A friend of mine and his sister were in a retail establishment when they overheard two employees talking. The employees described exactly what my friends were wearing and said they were stealing.
My friends were not ever stopped, questioned or detained but were watched as they exited.
Could they not sue the retailer and the employee(s) for slander?
Dont these statements fall under defamatory statements actionable per se because they impute a crme thus not requiring proof of damages?
Would this be a hard case to prove and would an attorney take it?
