If somebody uses a name on legal documents, but has a different name on their passport...with no traces of the first name being their own, can a/multiple testimonies suffice as proof?

For example person A. goes to school under the name john doe, but his real name is bob lemming. Bob lemming has no legal documentation to prove he has completed his school work. Can he bring in his teachers to testify that they did know him as john doe? can a judge then make a court order telling the school to change the name on the diploma to bob lemming?

Sorry for the poor explanation, had a hard time thinking this out.
