I am a Louisiana resident. I am Native American with a roll number from a tribe recognized by the state of Alabama. My wife and I have recently adopted a baby. When I received the application for a roll number for my child, one of the questions asked was is the child adopted? Am I obligated to answer this question? Can the tribe deny my child a roll number because he is adopted?

Native American tribes have the right to determine who is and is not member of their tribes. These decisions are generally outside the jurisdiction of the laws of the United States.

There might be some tribes will give membership to adoptees, but most will require a certain percentage or quantum of blood lineage or being physically born to parents who are tribal members to be considered a member. Some tribes with significant casino revenue have been known to agressively expel members for inadequate blood ties or other reasons - since it increases everyone else's share of the gold.
