Illinois
I am posting this for a friend. Several years ago, she married a foreign national in IL. They then moved to his home country and legally married there as well. When the marriage broke down, they divorced in his home country where they were living at the time. There were no children and no property involved. She then returned to the U.S.
Now she is back in IL and plans to remarry there. The question she has is whether her divorce abroad is recognized in the U.S., or should she pursue a divorce in IL as well. The latter option is complicated by the fact that she has no current address or other information on her former husband. She does however have the paperwork of her foreign divorce.
