Question about Investigation Records

What is the name of your state? NY

Backstory:
About 2 years ago I found child porn on a coworkers computer (I'm one of the IT guys at the job). My boss reported it and I was questioned by 2 detectives (among other people).

Questions:
I've recently got a new job but need an FBI Name Check to be approved before I can be accepted. Depending on your name and whatever records are available (even if you're just referenced as a neighbor, witness, friend etc) FBI Name checks can take an EXTREMELY long time so I'm wondering:

In cases that involve felonies like child pornography, does the state handle this or are these FBI issues? I assume the guys were NYPD detectives since this is an isolated incident that I/my boss reported (but honestly can't remember who they told me they were).

I assume the case was dropped, my coworker still works there and it couldn't have been him since the dates on the files were before either of us started employment. What happens to the investigation/files/information acquired after an investigation is dropped?

My biggest question is whether this information is passed on to the FBI or if this is just a State issue? If it's passed on and I'm referenced as a witness I'm afraid it's going to extend the time frame of the name check.

If you are listed only as a witness somewhere, it really doesn't matter. Unless these guys do a very, very extensive background, it is unlikely they will find that you were a witness to any criminal investigation.

Why should you be concerned about that? Are you actually a suspect?

No I'm not a suspect. I'm worried about this Name Check thing. A friend of mine has been stuck (for immigration purposes though) for about a year in the process because his name is so common. And he told me if I ever had a main file or referenced even as a witness or coworker in an investigation that would delay everything. So now I just thought about that whole thing 2 years ago and it sent me wondering. I'm not sure how extensive the background check is but it's for the FBI so you never know.
