As an offshore oilfield contruction worker in Louisiana (Gulf of Mexico), I work for an hourly wage that was stated in my employment agreement which I signed 3 yrs. ago. Recently, I have been required by my employer to attend numerous safety and work related training and refresher courses at their offices at a reduced hourly wage (less than 1/2 my usual offshore wages --their so-called shop rate). Some of these sessions only last 4 hrs. or so resulting in me only getting paid for 4 hours for the day at less than 1/2 my usual wage and a typical 12 hour day. With travelling a great distance, this is a great financial hardship for me. Is this practice legal in light of my employment agreement? Thank you anyone.
