contract extension

i recently rang up to upgrade my broadband, at no time during the call the operator mentioned that an upgrade would automatically extend my contract by another 12 months.

they are now telling me that i am tied in for another 12 months because its in the small print of my contract and so they didnt need to tell me during the upgrade call.

is that correct?
