Does placing real property in a trust automatically sever joint tenancy.

It should sever joint tenancy. The property will be re-titled in the name of the Trust.

Yes. Selling or transfering property held jointly breaks the ownership and changes it to tennants in common. However, simply "putting it in the trust" does nothing. It must be retitled.
