What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? ma
If original settlor has died, and there is only one trustee named, how can additional trustees be added and does that have to go through lawyer? Also -- trust established in one state, trustee lives in another (always has)

there should be language in the trust document that talks about appointment power of the trustee. unless there is some sort of weird exception, i think it is best to give that power to the beneficiary.

You need to go to the courts to change the trust.

On another note, giving the beneficiary the right to name the trustee, in certain cases, has allowed creditors to breach the trust's protections.
