Hello, I need advice to see if I need to proceed with anything.

Here is a little backround on my situation. My 58-year old Uncle - who currently lives with me (unemployed, evicited) has no life insurance policy whatsoever. He really has no intention to get one either - finanically he has nothing - I am his financial supporter (and there is no way I am taking on yet another burden because of him paying for his life insurance.) He has no surviving relatives, with the exception of myself (I am 27 years old) and my 24 year old brother. So that being said - I qualify for his next of kin.

I am wondering what I can do - if anything - and if I need to do anything to protect myself in the event of his demise. He has no property in his name - although his house was sold for sherrif sale back in 2000. He has some collectors calling for him for minimal debts, etc. But I really do not want any financial responsibility for this man at all. I do not want any collectors calling me when he dies, I don't even want to pay for this mans funeral (which I will have to) when he dies for a LIST of personal reasons. He is - in short - a manipulative leech who has done this to 3 other family members (who all have since died) and I just cannot wash my hand of him and let him be homeless.

Is there anyone that knows if I need to do something to protect my interests? What about my brother? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Pennsylvania is where we resideWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

If he has no assets, then you will not need to worry about probate.

If he owes money, unless you agree to pay for any of his debts, you have nothing to worry about.

There isn't a snowballs chance in hell I would agree to paying any of his debts.

So we have nothing to worry about then?

Thank you so so so much. This has been on my mind for quite some time....

Keep his assets, liabilities, and accounts absolutely separate from yours. Do not set up any joint checking/savings accounts, or co-sign for anything.

He is a separate entity, which just happens to be using your address.

Collectors will call but you can simply tell them there is no estate and unfortunately they will not get paid.
