What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
Colorado

hello all, I was wondering if it was possible to be investigated without your knowledge. Don't they have to tell you you are being investigated?

I called the police and asked if any reports or complaints had been made against me, they said they're were no recent reports. Does this mean i'm not being investigated? what i'm concerned about involves emails (Not porn, or anything like that, harrassment)
If the person recieivng the emails and might have reported it does not live in the same town as I do; should i call and ask his dirstrict if any complaints have been made. Or would the complaint be linked to me and therefore my address.

No. The police or anyone else do not have to tell you that you are being investigated.

They can even lie to you. It means that they TOLD you there were no recent reports ... that doesn't mean there have been no reports or that they are not investigating "old" reports.

Any complaint would likely have been made where the victim lives or received the e-mails.

A suggestion, stop the e-mails and make no further contact with the other party. That will prevent any further need for worry. If a report has been made, they will contact you soon enough.

How are they allowed to lie to me?
if it happened to weeks ago, what are the chances that they would of pressed charges by now?

Telling you there's an investigation may compromise the investigation. They are doing what is necessary in the pursuit of justice.

If they're going to press charges, they're going to wait until they have enough evidence to do so. We don't know what evidence they may or may not have obtained, so we cannot possibly guess on a time frame.

Because telling people they are being investigated can sometimes be foolish.

Who can say? Where I used to work, it took the DA a about a month to issue an arrest warrant. Where I work now it takes about three days, but he would also want to see a statement from the suspect or an attempt at one.

Chances are they will want to hear from you before they seek a warrant.

Like I said, leave this person alone and hope you are worrying for nothing.

The Government doesn't have to tell John Gotti "Hey, we're investigating you! Stop taking on your phone! Hurry up and start destroying evidence!"
