What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC

I had been an outstanding employee for many years. But last year I messed up and was on an improvement plan for a few months. I was improving and had received positive feedback in my file. Last week my department announced that there would be layoffs with severance pay in the next few months. Two days later, I was fired because I was told my performance had not improved (despite the positive feedback in my file). I believe I was fired to avoid paying me severance. Is there anything I can do?
