If I work 15 hours in one day, is my employer required to pay overtime for the hours worked in excess of 8?

As it stands, the first 40 hours of work that I do, regardless of when they occur, or how many consecutive hours there are, are considered regular time. Only once I work more than 40 do I get overtime, if I'm not forced to take comp time.

I know there has to something wrong with this pay method, but I need some reference point to either prove they're wrong or that I'm wrong.

Thanks.
