Illinois was the state I was working in.

I trained for a job for a week and decided to quit the job after the one week training. My old employer is refusing to pay me for the stated training that is in writing on my job offer for a total of 250 for the week. He is stating that I did not return my training route books. I returned the books to his office on a sunday night to the front doorway while they were closed. I am not sure if they are trying to scam me or if they really do not have the books. I have sent various emails because that is there preferred way of contact for them and they have been rude and very unprofessional. I have all the emails sent and all communication documented They are a very small company and the owners are not very professional. I need help with writing a demand letter and I am worried I do not know the steps on what exactly what to do. I am currently in Michigan and the employer is in Chicago IL so I can not just go in there and talk to them. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

contact the Illinois department of Labor.

and leaving the books on the stoop. Not a good idea. They may not have gotten the books. They may have been stolen. You have no proof that you left them.
