Power of attorney?

Can my wife represent me on a small claims case if I'm out of town, and I am the only one listed as the plaintiff? It's an eviction, and I have to work over the court date and will be out of town. I am thinking yes if I give her power of attorney before I leave town??

I am thinking no unless she's a lawyer. Why not just contact the court and have the hearing moved to a new date?
