a friend was recently terminated. in order to get the severance package offered, she was made to sign a form agreeing not to sue the company. my question -- is this legal? can a company require you to sign away your legal rights in order to get severance offered?

Your friend was apparently a private employee, at-will, no union. So such a release is common and legal.
