In the state of Michigan, what does the term "in lieu" mean?

A friend of mine was recently wrongfully let go from her job and the final check they gave her had part of the amount listed as "in lieu". Can she cash the check or does "in lieu" mean that if she signs and cashes the check, she loses all rights to take action against her former employer?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

"In lieu of" means "instead of" so it depends on what the word(s) after "in lieu of" is/are. If those are the only words, then it could mean that this check is in lieu of a regular ADP payroll check or direct deposit because it was handwritten or given immediately before the normal pay day and would mean "in lieu of a regular standard paycheck."
