What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

I have 2 years left on my mortgage - approx $10,000
I have been told that if I pay it off and I am sued (for whatever reason) that they can take my house because it will be free and clear with no leins on it.

Is this true?

Should I consider refinancing?

It is every homeowners dream to pay off their house but if this is true then I may want to reconsider that my dream may become my nightmare.

Please advise.

You were told wrong. It makes no difference how much of a mortgage you have on your house. If they could, they'd take it subject to the $10,000 lien (presuming the house was worth more than that) too.

However, if it's your primary residence, it's pretty much off-limits to being seized to satisfy a judgment in Virginia.
