I am union and our company just sold the plants in our division but not the equipment. We were given no notice of this and laid off. Were they supposed to give us notice and are we entitled to any compensation?

Unfortunately all the answers to your questions are (or should be) contained in your Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and none of us here at this board have access to it. That means you will have to read the CBA to find out. Furthermore, your exclusive rememedy is to file a grievance with your union steward or forever lose all rights that you may have with regard to this employment problem.

Please also surf around for the WARN Act. Even though the penalties for an employer are not all that much, it opens up governmental substadized "opportunities" for employees from extension of unemployment compensation benefits to paid retraining.
