I have an idea for a line of t-shirts where I would want to use old pictures of famous authors (all deceased). It is very easy to obtain pictures on the internet, and considering most of these pictures are used repeatedly on multiple websites, I'm not sure how to go about obtaining permission to use them on t-shirts. Where do I begin, and furthermore, is it even possible to gain rights to use these images? Some date back to the 18th century and even before.
