What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? GA
My brother passed away in February 2010 without a will in GA. The son who lives in GA is now executor of his estate which was open in probate on 5/17/10. I found this out on the website. He has cut off all communication with the family. I live in WA
I paid all of the funeral expense with the promise from his son of repayment when the estate is settled. How do I file a lien against the estate to make sure I get reimbursed?

If your brother died intestate....was the son the only heir? Is their RE involved?
An executor (executrix) carries out the provisions in the will.
You mention family. Yet no will.
Typically a probate Judge would appoint an administrator.
Consult a probate attorney regarding repayment.
