arrested in Yuma cty Az on drug charges

My son was arrested near Wellton, in Yuma county at a check spot. Drug dogs found pot, hash, and paraphernalia, which sorry to say someone gave them as a wedding gift. He spent the night in jail, and was released the next day on own recognizance. We have a lawyer and will have a court "appearance" via phone in 2 days. The attorney seems to think it will be knocked down to misdemeanor. Does anyone know if this is the case? Or are they fairly hard nosed on keeping felony charges. This is his first arrest. He and his wife live in San Francisco.What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
