What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Louisiana

My friend has a small brokerage account listing her and deceased husband as owners. Example - Mary Smith and John Smith (decd). The brokerage has advised that to change this she must provide
1. Affidavit of Domicile
2. Death Certificate
3. Court Appointment

She has the first two, but not the third. There was no will and probate was not started because there were very few assets and she was told there was no need to do so.

Any good advice on how to get this resolved? She can travel to New Orleans if required, but doesn't know where to begin. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

She may not necessarily need to travel to New Orleans. She needs to talk to a New Orleans probate attorney about this. Most counties/parishes have simplified procedures for smaller estates. Even though this technically doesn't qualify as a "smaller" estate since it is of no actual value, she still may need to go through the formality of filing to open up probate. Soon after filing she will be issued a document called "letters testamentary", giving her the legal authority to handle all estate matters, and a certified copy of this document is what she will need to present to the brokerage.
