What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

My brother-in-law died Dec 2009. Prior to his death, my sister and he had gone through a bankruptcy. Included in that bankruptcy was a motorcycle. The agreement re: the motorcycle was that payments would be made to the law firm that handled the case. With the bank's knowledge, I assumed the payments and took possession of the bike.

I went to the Dept of Motor Vehicles to register the bike. I had the death certificate and a letter from my sister and they refused until the lien is satisfied. I then contacted the bankruptcy attorney and was able to obtain a letter from their firm, to take to the DMV stating that they were the liaison between the bank and my sister and that the bank would not rewrite the contract.

Given the set of circumstances, is there any way I can get this resolved so that I can register and insur and drive the motorcycle.

Thanks for your time and assistance.
