Stabbing Victim needs to retain belongings from stabbers residence

My friend was staying at someones house and is not on the lease. There was a dispute with the person that was on the lease and that person stabbed my friend (nearly killing him) and my friend would now like to get his poessisions which includes 2 guitars, clothes, and money, back from the apartment that the two had shared. The property owner has stated that if the police escort him he can get his stuff, but I'm imagining that this isn't as easy as it sounds. The person that is on the lease is currently wanted for attempted murder, and is on the run, and as far as is known, has left the apartment abandoned.

If the owner said your friend could come back with the police, then your friend should call them and ask for a civil standby. What has he got to lose?

Nothing to lose, I'm just wondering what actual legalities are involved, and how the law is or is not on his side.

If he was a resident and has a way to get in without breaking in, chances are the police are not going to stand in the way. However, the police are not going to decide who owns what property if any question arises.

As I said, he has nothing to lose by having the police come to stand by while he grabs his personal property. The worst thing that would happen is that they say they cannot make it or they do not show for some reason.
