What happens at the arraignment ?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Georgia

My friend who has been sitting in Bibb County for over 4 months now has an arraignment date for next week - Tuesday as a matter of fact. His pd said he would visit him if there were any changes in his case and he has not even though this date has been set for a week.

My question is, what happens at the arraignment ? I understand he will hear the charges against him and be asked what he will plead. If he pleads guilty, will he be sentenced right then ? Or is it better to not plead guilty and try to work out a plea agreement with the DA ?

Thanks for your help, as usual ! :)
