I am thinking about leaving my company and starting a competitor. I have not signed any non-competes and I will not be violating any patents of my current company. I am, however, an engineer in my company and know a lot of the inter-workings of the company. The technology I want to use in the new business will be similar but it is not violating any intellectual property laws as I (vaguely) understand these laws. Honestly, the technology isn't that unique, it is just the way we use the technology that makes it interested, but... there are other competitors out there that do the same things although each company keeps the details hidden from one another.

I am thinking about getting an attorney but without understanding the actual technologies that I use and will use, I'm not sure how much help the lawyer will be.

Is it true that if the company does not have patents and I never signed a non-compete, there is nothing the company can go after me with?

Thank you very much.
