What is the name of your state? California.
A friend and I wrote a number of songs in past years but never copyrighted any of them. My writing partner died in 2007. I now want to copyright these songs, will I be the sole owner of the copyrights?

The song was copyright protected from the minute it was expressed in tangible form. The deceased cowriter accrued rights from then. His successors (heirs) get his rights.
