What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Hello, I am a software developer located in California. I am wondering, if I create a game in which characters "hum" popular tunes (from artists like Britney Spears, Metallica, Beatles, etc), and sell this game, is that grounds for lawsuit by these artists or their labels? there won't be an lyrics sung, just humming of popular tunes. Thanks.

You're opening yourself up to the a lawsuit from the rights holders (typically the music publisher). The melody is protected by copyright as well. You'd need sync rights to use it in a video game.
