Non-payment for services rendered

My father-in-law was hired by a self-employed businessman to help with home improvements. There was no signed contract, only a verbal agreement. It has been two and a half weeks and my father-in-law has not been paid for his services. The self employed businessman owes him more than $650.00. What can he do to collect the money that is owed to him????

My response:

Let's assume that your father-in-law decides to sue.

How is he going to prove he did the work to a judge ?

In other words, and besides his "word", what evidence does your father-in-law have to prove his case to the judge ?

Since your father-in-law would be the Plaintiff in the lawsuit, he would have to carry his burden of proof against the Defendant "business person".

Without hard evidence, the matter merely becomes a " He said / He said " spitting match.
